New Redcliffe Talent Makes Mark

Redcliffe Dolphins Rugby League Football Club - Rd 3 vs Ipswich

EXCITING Redcliffe youngster Delroy Berryman has announced himself to Intrust Super Cup followers with a stunning hat-trick of tries in his team's 30-10 victory over the Ipswich Jets.

Berryman spent the majority of last season in the FOGS Cup with the Dolphins, notching 13 tries to catch the eye of club head coach John Dixon.

Not only did Berryman impress Dixon with yesterday's performance, but he made a big impression in front of the Channel 9 television cameras.

Wearing the number 1 jersey but playing on the left wing, Berryman notched his first try in the 35th minute when he backed himself to beat Ipswich's last line of defence.

He crossed twice more in the second half, with his first after the resumption of play proving to be the turning point in the round three clash.

After taking a 10-8 lead into half-time, Ipswich was right in the contest and pushing for a third try with another attacking raid on the Redcliffe line.

But after a great tackle that dislodged the ball from the grasps of centre Brendon Marshall, Redcliffe halfback Luke Capewell swooped before positioning Berryman with a perfect pass.

Berryman sprinted 90m downfield to give the Dolphins the lead for the first time in the match.

Further tries to powerful second rower Paul Ivan and Capewell ensured Redcliffe would notch its third straight win.

Playing against his former club, Capewell's long-range try came from another Ipswich turn over.

Ipswich is yet to record a win from three starts, but there were signs yesterday that a victory is not far off.

The Jets made a blistering start to the match, with early tries from Ramon Filipine and Tyson Lofipo putting the visitors in a strong position.

The left side attack of Donald Malone and Jarrod McInally was also threatening, but Ipswich couldn't turn the pressure into points after the initial onslaught.

Ipswich was however the first team to cross the line in the second-half after five-eighth Brendon Lindsay was on the spot to pick up the ball from a Todd Riggs cross kick.

The try was disallowed by the video referee who detected an Ipswich knock-on in the contest for the ball.

Redcliffe Dolphins 30 (Delroy Berryman 3, Maurice Kennedy, Luke Capewell, Paul Ivan tries; Liam Georgetown 3 goals)
