Sea change agrees with Mortimer
ROBBIE Mortimer has taken a new path in his rugby league career and he's loving it.
The Orange CYMS junior joined the Redcliffe Dolphins colts squad in November last year.
The youngest son of Canterbury stalwart Peter Mortimer, Robbie had been with the Parramatta SG Ball side in 2011.
While Robbie was with the Australian Institute of Sport, he was approached by the Dolphins recruitment manager.
"I looked into it and it's a great club and I'm really enjoying it," Robbie said.
The 18-year-old will play in the Queensland Cup colts and has a challenging pre-season with the Dolphins.
"This [pre-season] is the toughest thing I've ever done," he said.
"I've never experienced anything like it. I did the Eels SG Ball [pre-season] last year and I thought that was tough but this was really hard.
I'm feeling the most fit and strong I've felt. Hopefully the hard work pays off."
Robbie started out at fullback with the Dolphins but has moved back into the halves.
He said his time at fullback was valuable.
"I had the move to fullback and I think it made me a better half," he said.
"I told them I'll play in the forwards if they want me to. I just love playing footy."
The Dolphins are the main feeder club to NRL club the Brisbane Broncos.
Robbie hopes he might get a chance to eventually play in the Broncos Toyota Cup side.
"This is a good opportunity for me," he said.
"Hopefully this year or next year I could get a run [in the Broncos Toyota Cup side]. You never really know where you could end up."
The pre-season training may have been tough, but there have been other challenges for the young footballer.
"It's been a learning experience because it's my first time living away from home.
I didn't realise how much mum and dad did for me," he laughed.
