Coaches Corner - May 2011
The big talking point of the past month was the return of Shane Tronc to Dolphin Oval.
Although it came as somewhat of a surprise, Shane's arrival was warmly welcomed.
The big man was last on the Peninsula in 2003 and only assistant coach Andrew Wynyard is left of the then playing contingent.
We have had Shane's services for the fixtures against Sunshine Coast and Ipswich and he has been great in both.
Shane was used off the bench in his first outing against the Sea Eagles.
This match required only a light workload for our forwards, but for all concerned it was good to see Shane back in Dolphin colours.
Against the Jets, Shane was in the starting line-up to give us best value of his ability and experience in the heavy conditions against a good Ipswich side.
Shane's efforts were valued by his teammates, who rated him as the Players' Player in this important win.
Although there is no exact timeline on his playing time with us, when Shane is with us our pack looks very strong.

I MENTIONED the imminent return of David Hala in a previous column.
David returned to the side in round three and is fit and rearing to go for a strong 2011 season.
We missed David's thrust at the end of last season. Now fit and becoming match hardened, David adds another dimension to our side with his bulk, pace and skills.
Quite a few people have mentioned about the size of our pack with Shane, David, Matt Britt and Chris Farrell as our bookends.
There is size among these four and it is supplemented by Matt Handcock, Greg Byrnes and Adam Marr.
We will need the combined strength and power of all seven over this coming month against sides that will match us in this department.
With State of Origin looming, and with Shane, Dave and Matt Britt on the Broncos books, it is highly likely we could be without them at Origin time.
I am confident our club depth will stand this test if and when it happens.

One key appointment we have made in the last month is the one of club captain.
Liam Georgetown was selected for this honour. It is an honour that Liam richly deserves.
A long-serving Dolphins player, Liam has the respect of everyone in the club and I'm sure will do a great job in this role.
As club captain, Liam's responsibilities span all three senior grades and he will represent all three grades in discussions with the club and will also be the main representative of the players at all official club functions.
Liam's form on the field has been just as impressive and he leads the Intrust Super Cup points scoring list after round five with 62 points from four tries and 23 goals.
Until next month,
