Titans Topple Dolphins

Redcliffe Dolphins Rugby League Football Club - Titans Topple Dolphins

The Meatwurx Junior Dolphins travelled to Nev Bycroft Oval at Runaway Bay to take on the might of the Gold Coast Titans in the Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga Cups last weekend.

In the Cyril Connell Cup game the Dolphins started well with a 40-20 at the end of good early sets.

The Titans youngsters then worked their way into the game and were on top for the next fifteen minutes.

As a result the Dolphins found themselves behind 12- nil on the scoreboard and struggling with the speed the game.

But as has been the way through the competition to date the young Dolphins didn't give in and kept working hard for an opportunity.

That opportunity came when Jaiden Reynolds snatched an intercept and ran nearly 80m to score under the posts which got the young Dolphins back to 12-6.

For the next ten minutes the Dolphins were on top, they converted that ascendency into points when the classy Ryan Miller crossed from dummy half, Brandon Lee converted and the teams went to halftime locked at 12-all.

The Dolphins came out and started the second half as they finished the first with Michael Frazer and Dylan Sikimeti leading from the front.

With around ten minutes remaining the Dolphins hit the lead when Frazer crashed over to give the Dolphins an 18-12 lead.

Discipline again was an issue with both teams losing players to the sin bin.

The Titans took advantage and scored under the posts to tie the match up at 18 - all.

The home side were awarded a penalty directly in front with three minutes to play and kicked the penalty goal to secure the win 20 to 18.

"I couldn't be happier with the way we competed on Saturday," Dolphins coach Steve Peoples said.

"The boys now have the confidence to know they can match with the best sides in this comp," he added.

Best for the Dolphins was Michael Frazer while Ryan Miller's leadership on the day showed he is a player to watch in the future. Zach Lister and Tom Opacic also had strong games in a good team performance.

Gold Coast Titans 20 (Kane Elgey, Quade Rippingale, Carne Rhodes tries; Zac Walsh 4 goals)

Redcliffe Dolphins 18 (Jaiden Reynolds, Ryan Miller, Michael Frazer tries; Ryan Miller 2, Brandon Lee goals)

In the Mal Meninga Cup game the final score wasn't a true indicator of how well the Dolphins played.

"They put in a determined effort only to see the Titans run away with it in the last ten minutes or so," Dolphins CEO Grant Cleal said.

Matthew Hilliar and Daniel Holmes crossed for tries for the Dolphins.

Gold Coast Titans 42 (Isaiah Marsh, Hemi Boynton, Japeth Vaoa, Corey McGrady, Jackson Springer, Sam Irwin, Jake Barnett, Sam Short tries; Jackson Springer 5 goals)

Redcliffe Dolphins 10 (Matthew Hilliar, Daniel Holmes tries; Sam Wright goal)

The Dolphins wish pass on their condolences to the family of our Cyril Connell Cup player James Hook whose grand father passed away on Saturday.

Mr Hook was a regular at Dolphin Oval when his son Jim (James father) was playing for the Dolphins in the 80's.
