Benson set to play his last
Dolphins stalwart Trevor Benson will finish his Rugby League playing career on Sunday.
The Redcliffe skipper will lead his side onto Dolphin Oval against Easts as the finale to a 14-year first grade career.
Benson, who has played with Redcliffe since the under 10 ranks is retiring after the match, the final Fourex Cup round of the season.
Despite beating Logan City 32-20 last Sunday, the Dolphins first grade has missed out on the semi finals.
"This is definitely my last game," Benson said.
"There won't be any comebacks by me. I want a couple of years out of the game."
As for a future in coaching, Benson said he had no great ambitions in that field.
"If the desire is still there, I will look at it. But there is no great desire to coach," he said.
It's a very tough calling and more time consuming than playing.
I want to spend more time at home and into my business, although I would like to be involved with the club in some sort of role in years to come."
There is little that Benson has not achieved in the red and white of Redcliffe... 200 plus first grade appearances, State jerseys, three grand finals, a Sydney contract, a stint in England and a Rothmans medal.
The only honour to elude him was a premiership but then, only the 1965 side has achieved that feat for the Peninsula club.
"This season has gone too quickly," he said.
"I lost four weeks at the start with a groin injury, but it has been an enjoyable year."
"Every season has been enjoyable, but I would have enjoyed it more had we made the semis.
It was disappointing to miss out, but this is a great bunch of blokes and a great club.
We put a lot of hard work in this season, but I think we will see the fruits of this work next season," He said.
"With all these good colts' players coming through, they will make up a top side. I will be there watching them." Benson, 31, said the highlights of his career including Queensland honours and making his first grade debut.
His 1990 Rothmans medal win was full of character. Ironically he won by one vote from Ian Stains, his Easts counterpart on Sunday.
He became the fourth Dolphin to win the award, following Ian Pearce (1978), Tony Obst (1980) and Bryan Niebling (1986).
"I would like to thank Des Webb for looking after me all these years," he said.
"Whenever I had a problem, I could always go to see Des and he would sort it out.
He was official who first signed me to the club and every year he talked to me about the following season."
Many league insiders believe he would have made a bigger impression in Sydney circles except for a broken arm he received during his 1988 season with St.George.
For now, "Benno" wants to spend time with his wife Kathy, and children Paula 8, Tim almost 6 and Sam 3.
As for this year's premiership Benson believes Wests can repeat their effort of last season and bring the title to Purtell Park.
