Broncos hit Dolphin Oval

Redcliffe Dolphins Rugby League Football Club - Broncos hit Dolphin Oval

THE Broncos will come to Dolphin Oval this month in final shakedown mode.

The NRL powerhouse will take on the Harcourts Dolphins on Saturday, February 27 in a trial that is certain to pack out the ground.

With their NRL season starting the following weekend, the Broncos have pledged a full-strength side, including Test stars Darren Lockyer, Sam Thaiday and Israel Folau to take on the Dolphins, barring injuries.

"This is their last hit-out before the season proper and they are not fielding a side anywhere else that weekend," Dolphins football club manager Grant Cleal said.

"I have been guaranteed that apart from injuries, such as the one Justin Hodges recently suffered, the Broncos will field their best side and go full tilt at us.

"That's great news for us, the fans and the Broncos as our boys as ready for the challenge."

In recent seasons the Dolphins have acquitted themselves well against NRL opponents with a combined Redcliffe-Aspley Broncos side downing Canberra 18-12 in 2007 and stretching the Broncos all the way in 2008 before going down 24-22.

This month's clash should also be memorable with a host of Dolphins putting up their hand for consideration by the Broncos in their NRL ranks.

Josh Hoffman already has a handful of NRL appearances to his credit while Palmer Wapau, Michael Spence, Michael Roberts, Tommy Butterfield, Matt Handcock and Mitch Rivett, Derrick Watkins and David Hala have turned out in either the Broncos' top side or their under 20s.

Add to that mix Canberra import Matt Britt, dual registered with the broncos and Redcliffe, ex-Cowboy Greg Byrnes and veteran forward Ben Jones (out of retirement), the Dolphins form a potent unit on their home ground.

Tough prop James Crombie has recovered well from his broken leg while Ryan Cullen will add spark from fullback after returning from Easts Tigers and Tim Yee should press for higher honours.

Cleal said it was likely the match would be staged in two 40-minute halves to duplicate an NRL fixture.

"In an exciting development, we are offering adults a ticket to this match, as well as a Dolphins season pass, for only $50," he said.

"This is great value considering you get Redcliffe in three grades against Norths on February 27 and then the match against the Broncos as well as en entire Queensland Cup season at Dolphin Oval.

"The same offers applies for children over 11 with their ticket $40."

The Dolphins have finalised their trial program.

On Saturday, February 13, the club will play Easts Tigers in all grades while on February 20 two squads (Q Cup and A grade) will head to Mackay and on the same two combinations (A grade and Colts) will take on Wests at Purtell Park.

Cleal said Redcliffe had finalised its playing roster for the 2010 season.

"We are all squared away," he said.

"We are happy with our depth and are not looking for any extra troops.

"We signed up a couple of players from our under 20s trial and that was it."
